SINGAPORE: Despite the economic downturn, some Singaporeans who did not manage to get tickets to this year's National Day Parade at the Marina Bay Floating Platform are paying to watch it "live" at some comfortable spots nearby.
Come August 9, instead of battling traffic and viewing the parade outdoors, some families are opting for air-conditioned comfort in hotels situated right in front of the floating platform.
At Ritz Carlton, demand for rooms with a view of the Marina Bay platform is still up, even though prices have been increased substantially.
Unlike last year, rooms at the Ritz are now priced according to the floor on which they are located – the higher the floor, the more expensive a room is.
Michelle Wan, director of Public Relations, The Ritz Carlton, Millenia, said: "We've had repeat customers who booked the rooms and the suites a year ago, after the National Day Parade. In fact, the suites are the more popular option of the two."
Over at Mandarin Oriental, where room rates remain the same as last year's, rooms that give guests a view of the platform have been fully booked.
And although other hotels in the area may not have the same commanding view, the promise of brilliant aerial performances is enough to get them near full occupancy on August 9.
