SINGAPORE: 3,264 Singaporeans have been named in this year's National Day Awards.
They have been honoured for contributions in areas such as port logistics, education and grassroots work.
It’s no easy task being at the helm of one of the biggest port operators in the world. And for his leadership, PSA International's group chairman Fock Siew Wah has been awarded the Distinguished Service Order, the top honour given out this year.
Mr Fock said: "I am deeply honoured by this unexpected special recognition and prestigious award. I am most appreciative of this wonderful gesture. I have always considered it an honour and privilege to serve. I chose to serve because Singapore is my country and my home.
“To know that my contributions, however small, have made a difference is rewarding enough. Having opportunities to work with and learn from the outstanding leaders of Singapore is a bonus. To receive this prestigious award is a big icing on the cake."
Mr Fock also thanked his wife and children for their support.
Mr Fock is also a veteran of the finance and transport sectors, and in his statement, he also paid tribute to those who had worked with him on various management boards. He noted their dedication to their work, and said the award belongs to them as well.
Ho Kwon Ping is among the six recipients of the Meritorious Service Medal this year.
The chairman of the board trustees of the Singapore Management University said he is grateful for the honour, and added that the award is a recognition of how far the university has come in the past decade.
Mr Ho said: "We're no longer a start-up. We're now a relatively mature institution with a whole different set of problems that deal with maintaining reputation, that deal with developing vision."
Other medal recipients include Richard Magnus, chairman of the Casino Regulatory Authority, James Tan, former commissioner of the Singapore Civil Defence Force, Koh-Lim Wen Gin, former chief planner and deputy CEO of the Urban Redevelopment Authority, Philip Ng Chee Tat, former chairman of the Sentosa Development Corporation, and chief of Defence Force LG, Desmond Kuek Bak Chye, who received the Military Meritorious Service medal.
