SINGAPORE: This year's first national day baby was born at Thomson Medical Centre at just one minute past midnight.

The natural birth took five hours.

Arriving over two weeks early and sharing her birthday with Singapore, the 2.9 kg bundle of joy was a pleasant surprise for her parents, mother Cheng Meow Eng, 33, and father Gan Chia Leng, 30.

Baby Gan Ern Qi has an older sibling.

The mother said: "I'm very happy that the baby has arrived at this precious moment. I would like to share the joy with all Singaporeans because this is a special day for the nation. Actually I did not expect her to come so early, but… she just came at this time."
