BEIJING: Over 300 Singaporeans working, living and studying in Beijing marked the Singapore's 44th birthday in the Chinese capital on Sunday.
Whether young or old, almost all of them were decked out in the national colours, and the mood was a highly festive one. At 8.22 pm, everyone recited the national pledge, joining Singaporeans from all over the world who were doing the same.
It was the first time the live screening of the National Day Parade was held at the Singapore Embassy in Beijing.
Singapore's Ambassador to China, BG Chin Siat Yoon, said in a speech that this year's National Day’s theme “Come Together, Reaching Out, Reaching Up” is the basis and foundation for the country's prosperity.
A Singaporean living in Beijing, Janet Ang, said: "I certainly hope that Singapore continues to prosper… (We should) encourage everybody, companies and foreigners with talent, to come live in our country and (for Singapore to) continue to grow and prosper and have peace and prosperity."
Another Singaporean living in Beijing, Lily Cheah, said: "This is the first time I am away from Singapore during National Day because I have been celebrating National Day (in Singapore) every year since 1970 until now."
Ang said: "If Singaporeans continue to be open-minded… keep ourselves on our toes, and be humble and keep acquiring new skills, do everything we can to participate in the regional economy and global economy, I think we should do fine.”
