SINGAPORE: It is exactly a year to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG). According to the IOC, Singapore is "well on track" to host more than half a million spectators and YOG athletes from all over the world.
On Friday evening, over 5,000 people gathered to witness the unveiling of a specially designed clock at Singapore's City Hall, which will count down to August 14, 2010.
Many of those present at the event could not wait to get started. "I hope to interact with those from overseas because I am part of the media, so I hope to get to interview them, talk to them and make friends," one said.
Another added: "We want to show the world that the youths in Singapore are ready to support such a big event."
And it is such hospitality that Singapore's Senior Minister S Jayakumar said would ensure the success of the games.
Professor Jayakumar, who is also Coordinating Minister for National Security, said: "It's important not to view this just as a sporting event, but a much bigger one where all Singaporeans can play a part in making the visitors feel welcome and feel at home."
In a video message beamed to spectators on Friday evening, IOC president Jacques Rogge said he is confident that Singapore will host a successful games despite being given a short preparation time of just two and a half years.
Over 500,000 local and overseas spectators are expected to be in Singapore next year for the Youth Olympic Games where 5,000 athletes will participate in 26 different sports.
