SINGAPORE: More Singapore companies are getting their staff engaged in corporate social responsibility or CSR work and many are putting in extra volunteer hours.
At the Children's Aid Society on Saturday, staff of property developer City Developments gave its building a makeover by designing and painting a colourful mural.
The company's managing director, Kwek Leng Joo, joined his team to show off his eye for detail, while others put their painting skills to good use in the playground.
This year is the 10th anniversary of City Developments' staff volunteer club, known as City Sunshine Club. Over 60 per cent of the company's staff are involved in volunteer work.
It started off with members clocking 200 volunteer hours annually. Since 2005, this has increased to 2,500 hours per year.
Staff from Agilent Technologies and Avago Technologies also made a difference to the community on Saturday.
About 100 employees and their families, along with Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Indranee Rajah, gave out food hampers to needy households at Block 126A, Bukit Merah View.
Agilent said more help should be given to the needy, especially during these tough times.
Teng Chai Hock, general manager of Agilent Technologies, said: "We have very enthusiastic employees who help run this programme. This is even more important during this very challenging time in the economic crisis."
"The gifts that are being given to the elderly are staples – noodles, milo, coffee. But they mean a lot to the senior citizens. As we went from house to house, you could see the reaction from each of them," said Ms Indranee.
