SINGAPORE: Several Members of Parliament (MPs) Channel NewsAsia spoke to agreed with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's comments on racial and religious harmony.
They said the call for tolerance and mutual accommodation is timely.
MP for Jurong GRC Halimah Yacob said: "Race and religion are very close to the people's heart. So I think his reminder is really timely. We ought to really think about it, ponder over it, and then each and every one of us, in our own respective communities, should then do our best to reach out to the other communities."
MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC Liang Eng Hwa said: "Generally, people have become more religious, and there is nothing wrong with that. But I think as we become more religious in our beliefs, we should not overlook how we communicate with our friends from other religious groups, so that... trust and confidence are built up."
MP for Tampines GRC Masagos Zulkifli said: "Racial and religious harmony is a very important cornerstone of our country's existence for the long term and has been for the many years since independence. And therefore, it is very important for Singaporeans to understand that they need to increase as much as possible the common spaces that we can interact with each other."
