SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong wrapped up the National Day Rally at the University Cultural Centre on Sunday night by calling on all Singaporeans to stay cohesive.
He said that is one key way the country can overcome economic challenges and grow.
It was an impressive celebration for Singapore's 44th birthday on August 9, but what really impressed Mr Lee was Singapore's ability to pull together a show for some 30,000 spectators. He said that reflected the kind of country Singapore is.
"The imagination and creativity which had to go into conceiving the show, the ability to organise, execute and make it happen. Everything was exactly what it was meant to be. The commitment to excellence in everything we do," said Mr Lee.
Another example was how no one walked off even when it rained during the preview for students in July, similar to what he had experienced during the 1968 National Day Parade.
Mr Lee said: "Even the rain couldn't dampen their spirits and the young participants stayed through the show, braved the storm, and said the pledge soaking wet."
Thousands of Singaporeans from all walks of life also came together islandwide to recite the pledge at 8.22pm on August 9. He said all these showed a united Singapore that can overcome challenges as one.
Mr Lee also used 40 pictures, including some from the recent "Then and Now" contest by MediaCorp's TODAY newspaper, to highlight how Singapore has been transformed in the last 50 years, along with a preview of what to expect in the near future. And the prime minister said Singapore will continue to improve, provided the people work together.
Despite the recession, Mr Lee said efforts are continuing to renew the city to make it the best place to live, work and play. He said: "As one united nation, we can continue to upgrade and build our city, and make this place our home, our future and our Singapore."
