SINGAPORE: Some 6,000 online users visited Channel NewsAsia's National Day Rally microsite on Sunday night.

Most of their comments were on the state of Singapore's economy and religious harmony. These topics were also uppermost in the minds of those interviewed by Channel NewsAsia at Raffles Place.

Many people thought the points raised by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on religious harmony in his National Day Rally speech was a timely reminder.

A member of the public said: "It's the whole thing about living together because we have so many different people living in this country. For religion and any special purposes, people to have this common space he was talking about, I think that's a good idea."

Another said: "The prime minister always brings salient and nice points which are very easily understood by everybody - common people - (and that is) very good."

While many caught the speech on television, others decided to opt for a more interactive experience by logging onto Channel NewsAsia's special National Day Rally microsite. Facebook and Twitter were also used to get their opinions across. And some users also commented on the video and photos that were used.

In addition, the site had specially selected MediaCorp bloggers who penned their thoughts while the National Day Rally speech was on going.

One of the bloggers and Channel NewsAsia's presenter, Otelli Edwards, said: "As PM Lee was talking and I was blogging, one of the things that came to my mind was whether Singaporeans are ready, if and when we are tested."

One in five of those who watched the LIVE streaming did so from overseas, with those from Australia, China and Malaysia forming the site's top three groups.
