What's in the New Year?
Posted: 20 December 2006 1558 hrs

January 1st officially became the first day of a new year in 46 BC when Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar.

New Year celebrations on January 1st are known to be more significant to the Western world with large parties held at places such as London’s Trafalgar Square and New York’s Time’s Square.

The first day of the new year is a mere public holiday to many Asians with celebrations for a new year being held later in the year.
