At New Year’s it is common to hear people breaking into "should old acquaintance be forgot…"
The tune "Auld Lang Syne" is a traditional New Year tune but in fact is sung, "should auld acquaintance be forgot".
The words come directly from a poem by Scottish poet Robert Burns and his collection "Songs from Robert Burns".
The song's title and lyrics are in Scots, and "Auld Lang Syne" may be translated literally as "long ago", or "days gone by".
Apart from the New Year, the song is also often played at funerals as it is a song of farewell.
In other forms, the tune has also been known to serve as state anthems.
