In the acting categories, ten individuals are first-time nominees. The other ten share a total of 49 nominations over the years. Three are previous Oscar winners - Meryl Streep, Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett.

Meryl Streep's nod for "The Devil Wears Prada" is her 14th, extending her own record for acting nominations set in 2002. Katherine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson are next with 12 each.

Britain's Kate Winslet is the youngest actress to receive five nominations at the age of 31. The previous record holder was Olivia de Havilland, who was 33 when she received her fifth nomination in 1949.

Penelope Cruz and Rinko Kikuchi are both nominated for foreign-language roles. Four performers have won Oscars for spoken languages other than English -- Sophia Loren ("Two Women"), Robert De Niro ("The Godfather Part II"), Roberto Benigni ("Life is Beautiful"), Benicio Del Toro ("Traffic").

If Clint Eastwood's Japanese-language film "Letters from Iwo Jima" wins best picture it would be the first foreign language film to win in the category. The seven previous foreign-language best picture nominees are: "Grand Illusion," "Z," "The Emigrants," "Cries and Whispers," "The Postman," "Life is Beautiful" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". - AFP
