An icon for Singapore
Posted: 31 August 2007 1056 hrs

  Singapore Bienale 2006

The Civic district of Singapore will be transformed come 2012, when the National Art Gallery opens its doors as a centre dedicated the visual arts from Singapore and Southeast Asia.

House within two historically important buildings, the City Hall and adjacent Supreme Court, the Art Gallery will also be THE place to carry out research and study of Southeast Asian art.

The official name of the National Art Gallery which will be chosen at a later date, will also host international art exhibitions, building up Singapore as a regional and international hub for the visual arts.

The design of the National Art Gallery which will become an icon in Singapore’s growing arts and cultural scene will have to offer visitors a unique cultural and museum-going experience, while providing civic and creative space for visitors.

At the same time, the challenge for designers will be to preserve the historic buildings through adaptive re-use.

The three winning designs from which one will be picked as the final masterpiece for Singapore, have all been 'built' around the classic columns and rich facade of the City Hall and Supreme Court, with the latter being graced by carvings depicting scenes of old Singapore.

Both the Supreme Court building and City Hall are no longer in use and the last time the City Hall was abuzz was during the 2006 Singapore Bienale. During Singapore's inaugural large-scale international visual arts exhibition the building was graced with different forms of visual art, a hint of the days to come. - CNA/sf
