Major Indonesian quakes

Indonesia has endured repeated quakes in recent years. Here’s a chronology of the major ones:


March 6, 2007 – A 6.3 magnitude quake hit Sumatra, killing more than 70 people, flattening buildings and displacing more than 1,700 people. The quake set off tremors in Singapore.


July 17, 2006 – A 7.7 magnitude quake off the coast of Java triggered a 3-metre high tsunami which killed more than 650 people.


May 27, 2006 – A 6.2 magnitude quake rattled Java, killing more than 5,700 people and destroying some 300,000 homes.


March 29, 2005 – A 8.7 magnitude quake hit Nias island, killing more than 2,000 people. Tremors were felt in mainland Indonesia and neighbouring countries Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.


December 26, 2004 – A 9.0 magnitude quake off the west coast of Sumatra killed more than 220,000 and left a trail of dead and missing in a quake-induced tsunami that ravaged coastal areas of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives; as well as parts of Africa.
