Protest at the UN in New York |
As protests continue on the streets of Myanmar so too are demonstrations in many capitals around the world, which are being staged against the military junta and its crackdown.
Public outrage over the shooting of demonstrators in Yangon spilled over into clashes between Australian police and protesters outside the Myanmar embassy in Canberra.
There were also public demonstrations outside the Myanmar missions in London, Paris, Geneva, Rome and other major cities around the world.
Hundreds of people who gathered outside the Myanmar embassy in Rome included ministers from the centre-left government. "We must not be discouraged and throw in the sponge, we must do everything possible to defend the monks in Myanmar," said Emma Bonino, Italy's minister for European affairs and foreign trade.
In Bangkok, about 300 Thai and Burmese protesters rallied outside the Myanmar embassy. About 2,000 Myanmar people also gathered outside their country's embassy in Malaysia, venting their anger in the city's usually quiet diplomatic area.
In the Philippines, rallies have been going on since Wednesday. Sympathy for Myanmar runs deep in the Philippines, said protesters said, because people recalled years of martial law under former Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos.
Over Jakarta, around 50 Indonesian foreign ministry officials, observed a period of silence to express solidarity with Myanmar's pro-democracy protestors. They were dressed in red shirts which is part of an online protest call, to show support to the people of Myanmar and the blood that they have spilled. -CNA/sf
