Suharto lies in hospital |
January 4: Former Indonesian president Suharto enters hospital with heart and lung problems.
January 5-6: The condition of Mr Suharto wavers, one day showing signs of improvements and another of instability.
January 9: Doctors say Mr Suharto remains in a critical condition.
January 11: Amid a flurry of activity at the hospital, officials announce that the former Indonesian has suffered multiple organ failure.
January 13: Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew visits Mr Suharto in hospital, the first foreign leader to do so. Speaking later, Mr Lee says he had come to visit and to pay tribute to an old friend, adding that he's sad that the former leader is not getting the recognition he deserves.
January 14: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad visits Mr Suharto in hospital. Speaking later in Kuala Lumpur, he says he was most saddened to see Mr Suharto in such a condition.
January 16: Doctors report that Mr Suharto is fully conscious and was able to indicate that he felt well. Plans to wean the former president off a ventilator are shelved as Mr Suharto remains weak and his condition is unstable.
January 17: Doctors say Mr Suharto is still critical after two weeks. Although he is under heavy sedation Mr Suharto is able to respond by opening his eyes when spoken to.
January 19: Doctors say the condition of Mr Suharto is "very good" and he may soon be taken off the ventilator and even allowed to return home.
January 20: Doctors say former Indonesian leader shows "amazing signs of recovery" by moving his hands and speaking in a whisper.
January 21: Bedridden for 18 days, the health of former Indonesian President Suharto suffers a slight setback. Doctors say his digestive system is not functioning properly and and fluid is collecting in his lungs.
January 25: Doctors for Indonesia's former president Suharto say he may be
taken off a ventilator soon allowing him to breath on his own as his health
slowly improves.
