SINGAPORE : Singapore leaders have sent their condolences on the passing of former Indonesian President Suharto.
In his letter to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President S R Nathan said Mr Suharto had built a successful nation within a short space of time.
He inherited a broken-back economy but managed to shape it to the modern state Indonesia is now.
Mr Nathan said the region has also lost a great statesman.
Calling Mr Suharto an illustrious leader, statesman and a worthy son of Indonesia, Mr Nathan said as one of ASEAN's founding fathers, Mr Suharto helped forge Southeast Asian unity and ASEAN's consolidation.
He also made the smaller neighbours comfortable with Indonesia, and consolidated ASEAN into a premier regional organisation.
In his letter to President Yudhoyono, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Mr Suharto was a patriot who loved his country deeply.
Under his leadership, Indonesia made tremendous progress.
In regional affairs, his leadership, vision and statesmanship enabled all ASEAN countries to grow and prosper in peace, and made ASEAN a respected player in the Asia Pacific.
Mr Lee said the strong bilateral ties Mr Suharto fostered, based on mutual benefit, respect and equality, will long be appreciated and remembered by Singaporeans. - CNA /ls
