APEC 2009 comes as economies emerge, some more tentatively than others, from the global meltdown of the past 24 months.
The discussions in Singapore will serve as a timely stock-take for the member economies that account for more than half the world's trade, and an opportunity to chart the next course of action.
With a theme of ‘Sustaining Growth, Connecting the Region’, APEC Singapore 2009 will look at ways to overcome the economic crisis and how member economies can position themselves better for a sustainable recovery.
In particular, the Singapore meeting will focus on efforts to strengthen global multi-lateral trading system by resisting protectionism and supporting the successful conclusion of the World Trade Organisation's (WTO) Doha trade talks.
Another area will be regional economic integration so that member economies are able trade and conduct business with each other more easily and efficiently.
The conference will also build on APEC’s work to date in promoting economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment across the Asia-Pacific region.
