SINGAPORE - Tampines Rovers opened up a five-point lead in the Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League table after beating Beijing Guoan 2-1 away at the Yishun Stadium on Tuesday night.
The eastern giants are in the hunt for their third league title since winning back to back in 2004 and 2005, and were expected to stroll past the Chinese side who are making their debut.
But the Stags received a jolt early in the match when Tan Tiancheng bulged the net in the eighth minute.
Defending stoutly, the Chinese side held the table-toppers at bay through the first-half, buckling only 16 minutes after the break when Qiu Li beat the defence to slot home the equaliser.
National winger Khairul Amri sealed victory six minutes later to give Tampines their fourth win of the season, hoisting the Stags to 13 points in the table.
French side Etoile and defending champions SAFFC trail on eight points, with both having a game in hand.
Qiu Li heads the scorers' chart with six goals, followed by Etoile's Frederic Mendy and Beijing's Tan with four each. - TODAY
