SINGAPORE: Singapore's Amanda Lim has made it to the girls' 50 metres freestyle semi-finals.
The 17-year-old finished eighth with 26.61 seconds at the heats Thursday morning.
Amanda is also leading the Singapore 4 x 100 metres freestyle team into Thursday evening's finals.
The quartet -- Amanda, Adeline Winata, Cheryl Lim and Chriselle Koh -- came in fourth in the qualifying race with a time of 4 minutes 01.27 seconds. The girls also managed to make the cut as the eighth best team after edging out South Africa and Japan. Meanwhile, in the 100 metres butterfly event, a tough battle is expected between China's Liu Lan and Italy's Elena di Liddo. Itay's Elena lost the gold medal to Liu Lan by only a nine tenth of a second, in the 50 metres butterfly event Wednesday night.
In the boys' 100 metres freestyle heats, the Republic's Clement Lim has made the cut for the last 16 spots. The Singapore Sports School student was the seventh fastest qualifier Thursday morning, with his time of 51.40 seconds.
Clement will be up against Australia's Kenneth To – the top qualifier with 50.67 seconds – as well as Spain's Aitor Martinez, who won a bronze Wednesday. Meanwhile, Singapore's Pang Sheng Jun will compete in the 50 metres breaststroke semis later Thursday.
Sheng Jun will be competing against hot favourites Flavio Bizzarri, Anton Lobanov and Nicholas Schafer. Overall, three gold medals are at stake on the penultimate day of the swimming programme later Thursday.
In the boys' 3-on-3 basketball preliminary competition, Serbia have overtaken Greece at the top of the Group A table. The Serbs edged out Puerto Rico 31-30 Thursday morning at Scape Youth Park. Meanwhile, in Group B's top-of-the-table clash, Argentina triumphed 31-27 over Lithuania. In badminton, Thailand looks set to win two gold medals at the match held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium later Thursday. In the boys' singles action, India's Prannoy Kumar beat Korea's Kang Ji Wook in three sets in the semis to reach the final. Prannoy will meet Thailand's Pisit Poodchalat for the gold medal playoff. Sapsiree Taerattannachai of Thailand will clash against Chinese teenager Deng Xuan in the girls' final.
Singapore's football boys will meet Montenegro's in the Group D match.
The winner of the match will top the group and avoid meeting Group C winners Bolivia in the semi-finals. The Jalan Besar Stadium match will be broadcast live on Channel 5 at 8.45pm.
The regular 9.30pm News on Channel 5 will be delayed to start at 10.45pm.
In weightlifting, Iran's Alireza Kazemineejad won Gold in the under-85Kg category, when he hoisted a total of 351 kilograms, beating Armenia's Gor Minasyan by just 1kg.
Hassan Mohammad of Egypt settled for the bronze with his lift of 330kgs.
Over at the Bishan Stadium, athletes struggled to cope with the heat and humidity as the track and field competition continued for a second day.
Singapore runner Ranjitha Raja was outclassed in her qualifying heats for the Girls' 1,000 metres after clocking 3 minutes 07.66 seconds.
Ranjitha's performance which was below her personal best time by almost 5 seconds saw her finishing overall in 18th place out of 33 runners. She will feature in the event's 'C' Final.
In the Boys' 400 metres hurdles, Cuba's Norge Lara Sotomayor's gold medal campaign got off to an excellent start, topping the field with the best qualifying time of 51.74 seconds.
But it was heartbreak for Gregory Coleman of the US, as he stumbled at the 2nd hurdle after injuring his hamstring.
The 17-year-old limped to the finish line, but was disqualified.
Medical staff were also needed after Chinese sprinter Xie Zhenye clocked the fastest 200 metres time of 21.27 seconds to qualify but later complained of exhaustion.
