SINGAPORE: The team from Singapore has won the latest stage of the "Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht" race.

Uniquely Singapore, owned by Keppel Corp, crossed the finish line on April 16 at about 8pm (Singapore time) at the end of Race 8.

This is the 2,080-mile stage from Hawaii to Santa Cruz.

Organisers said it was a nail biting finish as the Singapore team managed to overtake Nova Scotia, the team from Canada, which arrived less than an hour later.

There are 10 internationally-sponsored yachts competing in the race, and this is the first victory for Uniquely Singapore.

The other yachts are expected to arrive over the next couple of days.

Clipper 07-08 is the sixth edition of the biennial Clipper Race.

The Santa Cruz stopover marks the first time the race has visited a port on the US West Coast. - CNA/de
