SINGAPORE: The Super Reds got one foot in the Avaya-J&J League Cup final after their 1-0 semi-final first-leg win over Balestier Khalsa on Tuesday night.

But the slim margin of victory means Balestier still have a fighting chance in Friday night's return leg at the Korean team's Yishun Stadium, where they have won all eight of their home fixtures in the NTUC Income-Yeo's S.League 2008 so far.

The Super Reds suffered a blow in the 20th minute when their captain, Yun Bo Young, was stretchered off the pitch with a serious knee injury, and sent to the hospital.

The Koreans got their breakthrough in the 47th minute when Faizal Amir brought down Oh Ddog Yi in the six-yard box, and Sin Hyun Ho converted the penalty.

Things got worse for the Tigers when defender Sofiyan Abdul Hamid was given his marching orders in the 49th minute for a rash tackle. But they did well with 10 men to prevent the highly-rated Super Reds, who are second in the S.League, from scoring a second.

Balestier came close to scoring near the end. Striker Andrew Tan's cross was scrambled clear and it fell kindly for midfielder Mba Vitus Onyekachi, who unleashed a fierce shot. But Super Reds' keeper Kang Su Ho brilliantly tipped over the effort. -
