BEIJING: Singapore swimmer Yip Pin Xiu clocked another world and paralympic record in Beijing's Water Cube on Monday, renewing the Republic's hopes for a gold medal.

Yip came in first in the Women's 50-metre Backstroke (S3) Heats with a record time of 57.92 seconds.

The timing put her way ahead of Britain's Fran Williamson, who was second with a time of one minute 06.75 seconds.

Germany's Annke Conradi came in third in overall heats with one minute 07.61 seconds.

Yip on Saturday clinched Singapore's first silver at the Beijing Paralympics, in the Women's 50-metre freestyle finals.

Despite not coming in first, she maintains the new world and paralympic record she set in the heats earlier Saturday, with a timing of 57.04 seconds.

Yip will compete for gold in the Women's 50-metre Backstroke finals in Beijing's Water Cube later Monday, at 6.12pm.
