SINGAPORE: Singapore defeated Vietnam 5-4 on penalties in a friendly match, as they gear up to defend the AFF Suzuki Cup for the third successive time.

Held at the Jurong East Stadium, the match had ended 2-2.

Singapore took the lead in the 39th minute through John Wilkinson, who headed in a cross from teammate Shi Jiayi.

The celebrations were short-lived, as the Vietnamese levelled through a penalty by Le Cong Vinh three minutes later.

Agu Cashmir opened the lead again for Singapore in the 78th minute but as luck has it, Vietnam's Phan Van Tai Em scored in the dying minute to force Singapore into penalty kicks.

Singapore will play their next friendly match against Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. - CNA/de
