Singapore: Preparations for the first Youth Olympic Games to be held in 2010 are progressing well, said the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC).

At the end of a visit by the YOG Coordination Commission on Wednesday, good progress was reported on the finalisation of the sports programme, with the daily competition schedule almost complete.

The Singapore host is now moving forward in planning for sports presentation at the inaugural games that will open on 14 August 2010.

"It will be important for SYOGOC to keep up the tremendous momentum it has built up so far as it moves towards operational readiness," said Sergey Bubka, chairman of the Coordination Commission.

The Ukrainian Olympian also noted that over the last six months, the Singapore team had worked hard on completing its venue master plan and YOG event schedule by day.

He added that much effort was also put into detailed operational and venue planning, which will remain SYOGOC’s focus for the coming months.

According to the Singapore YOG team, there were two days of fruitful and open discussions with the IOC Coordination Commission (CoCom) on areas such as venue development, the Culture and Education Programme, as well as the YOG Event Schedule which integrates the sport, culture and education programme schedules.

SYOGOC chairman and IOC Executive Board member, Ng Ser Miang, said: "We are in the midst of venue planning to synthesize the various functional areas' operations plans at each venue.

"This will be completed in the second half of this year as we prepare to enter the Operational Readiness Planning phase in September 2009."

With the inaugural games 15 months away the Singapore organiser unveiled on Wednesday the Singapore 2010 sport pictograms.

The 26 sport pictograms representing the different fields of competition at the summer games are derived from ‘the Spirit of Youth’, which is the official Singapore 2010 emblem.

"The sport pictograms as graphic symbols of all the Singapore 2010 sports will provide instant recognition and connection to the YOG," said Mr Goh Kee Nguan, chief executive officer of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee.

"The dynamic graphic style of the pictograms will serve to inspire youthfulness, adventure, openness and fun – virtues embodied in ‘the Spirit of Youth’ emblem," he added when the pictograms were unveiled at the Singapore 2010 Learning Centre.

The contemporary graphic style can be seen in the dynamic nature of the pictograms, which capture the ‘athlete-in-motion’ and represent passion, dedication and sportsmanship in youths.

The sport pictograms incorporate a flame to embody the youth’s passion to learn and the purple star signifies excellence.
