Formula 1 fans, what would your fandom be without the joy of merchandise? We pick out four gadgets that’ll help you live and breathe F1 in your digital life.
Logitech Momo Racing Force Feedback Wheel
So you can’t get behind the steering wheel of a Formula 1 car. So what? Grab Logitech’s Momo Racing Force Feedback Wheel (S$149) and load your favourite racing game on the computer.
Made by the racing pros at Momo, renowned makers of racing equipment, accessories and parts for cars, this set of controllers for your computer can make you feel every bump and grind with its force feedback wheel technology.
To keep things authentic, the 28-centimetre rubber steering wheel has paddle shifters so you can shift gears while keeping your hands on the wheel. There’s also a manual knob for sequential shifting.
The foot pedals feature a carpet-grip so you won’t find them slipping away as you brake frantically to get a handle on that onscreen chicane.
Vertu Racetracks Legends Series A Collector’s Edition
The Vertu series of phones might not feature cutting-edge features but oh, how they drip with pure opulence.
The Vertu Racetrack Legends series features six of its exquisitely handcrafted phones in a custom carbon fibre and titanium box.
Launched in May 2006, the series was made to commemorate six renowned F1 tracks — Monza, Silverstone, Le Mans, Indianapolis, Monaco and Nurburgring. Each of these chi-chi cellphones is encased in petrol-resistant leather and features a laser-etched map of the respective race tracks they’re named after.
According to Vertu, the Liquidmetal chassis alloy is stronger than aerospace-grade titanium and can withstand the impact of being run over by a sports car.
So what’s the damage? Each Vertu costs S$9,900, but the whole series goes for a whopping S$96,000.
Formula 1 Collection Silver-Plated USB Memory Stick, Carbon Fibre Mouse Mat
The official F1 online store (f1store.formula1.com) has a blinged-out USB memory stick for those keen to store your data files on a glorified flash drive. Silver-plated and capable of holding 1GB of memory, it’s certainly not cheap at S$147. There’s also a split key ring attachment.
But wait, there’s more. Check out the F1 carbon fibre mouse mat with leather inlay. Hand-made in England by F1’s specialist composite technicians, it has wrist rests and sides made of carbon fibre and an inlaid mousing layer covered in leather.
The mat sports an Italian black suede backing and works with both optical and the ball-operated mouse devices of yore. If its looks doesn’t raise your eyebrows, maybe the 340-euro price tag will.
Asus-Lamborghini VX3 Laptop
If you couldn’t get your hands on Acer’s limited-edition Ferrari laptop earlier this year, you might want to wait for the Asus-Lamborghini VX3 laptop to whiz by instead.
The VX3, already launched in Taiwan and expected to be available in other markets soon, is the newer edition of the VX2 (S$3,998) Lamborghini-emblazoned laptop that was out in April 2008. It has been streamlined to a 12.1-inch (30.7 cm) widescreen form factor, down from its predecessor’s 15.4-inch size.
The official specifications and price aren’t out but here’s what we managed to dig up from Asus. The VX3 will sport the signature yellow and black hues and will come with a Penryn-based Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and a high-resolution webcam. The laptop’s hinge will be crafted out of titanium alloy and it’ll have a leather-bound palm rest as well. -TODAY/rose
