Not alien to trend-setting: MOTO

The phone of the Trendy has to be the Motorola.

It has painted the town red with its "Do the (red) thing" campaign and distinctive red MOTORAZR V3 that helps fight AIDS by sending US$17 towards the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa, with each purchase of the handset.

Toting the phone will show you have a conscience and at the same time, good taste in design.

If you choose the other members of the MOTORAZR family, especially the new maxx V6 or the V3xx, you'll be forgiven for sporting a big hairdo, brightly coloured clothes or a new walk, and the reason is that you've come under the powers of an alien.

In setting yet another trend, the team at Motorola have unleashed a pair of aliens named Jiblet and Bernard.
They are stars of a made-for-mobile micro-series that ride on the strength of the multimedia capabilities of the MOTORAZR maxx V6 and V3xx with their HSDPA and EDGE technology for speedy downloads.

The four-part series were specially created for Motorola and tell of the transformation of a dull world inhabited by gloomy creatures such as Bernard, into a MOTO-cool, colourful and connected world that high-energy dude, Jiblet, unleashes.

Each episode is available for download via mobile or computer and it's only a matter of time before the pair created by design, motion and broadcast digital animators, tokyoplastic, take over the world with their high cool-cult factor.

Aside from fun, the lure of the Motorola has to be its ability to also offer form and function.

The MOTORAZR maxx V6 features a futuristic blend of metal and chemically hardened glass cladding, while the V3xx boasts of a precision cut keypad.

Thin is definitely in with the Moto crowd, with the new MOTORAZR clam-shell range coming in at just 15mm for the maxx V6 and 14.9mm for the V3xx.

The MOTORIZR Z3 is just as slim and light as the MOTORAZR but appeals to those who aren't into clamming up with its slide-up function.

The slider is light with a firm glide to open, but you'd only want to trigger the slide to dial a number. Other than that, the device will offer all other functions in its neat compact package un-opened.

The central dial which dresses the face of the phone will take care of most navigation through the phone's various software features which show up clearly on the TFT screen.

The star feature of the MOTORIZR Z3 has to be the 2megapixel camera with flash and zoom function.

The white light flash is powerful and should only be used for night shots and subjects a few metres away.

If your subject is too far away, the phone camera should overcome that problem easily with its 4x zoom.

As in other models the photo-taking option comes with different modes such as Black and White, Sepia or Blue to add that dash of fun to your shots.

Talking about fun shots, you can also set the phone camera to the self-timer mode to include yourself, except you will have to second-guess as to how the shot will turn out as there is no micro-mirror.

To keep the phone small, there have been some compromises.

It is a squeeze under the battery cover, with both SIM card and MicroSD sharing the same space. Popping the SIM card in and out can be a little tricky and requires small fingers.

All in though, this is a fun-to-have, carry-about phone.

It can go anywhere, from party dressed in the smallest purse or tightest pants to a bush walk, since it is just under 16mm thick and weighs 115 grams.

You can also keep yourself fairly well occupied during down time, from the Web browsing capabilities to the MP3 player that can be navigated easily from the central navigation button on the front of the slider.
