Both beauty and a beast

A slider that promises "the big world in the palm of your hand" and phones that boast of "beautiful technology" is what Samsung is offering Asian consumers.

Unveiling a slew of newly designed handsets at CommunicAsia 2007 in Singapore, the mobile manufacturer also hinted of more surprises soon to make life even better for Asia's mobile phone users.

Those who loved the 2006 Ultra Edition range will find themselves even more in love once they encounter the Ultra Edition II which offers both sliders, clamshell and candy-bar designed handsets that are blend of form and function.

Among the latest is the U700, which Samsung boasts as the world's slimmest HSDPA at 12.1mm.

Upping the ante with 3.6 Mbps data transfer speeds, the slim slider doesn't just look beautiful, it's also super lightweight and with smart keys that flow into the wide mirror-like screen.

The design is very stylish and whimsical - much like the product designer Kyungjin Han, herself.

Looking more like a K-pop star, Han shared her inspirations for the phone's designs, jewels such as the sparkling diamond lent colour to the phone's sheen, while the stars in the night sky were plucked by the designer to become the bright touch keys for the phone.

To make it a complete experience for users, Han put grooves into the main phone dial, making it more tactile and offering a contrast to the eye in the otherwise smooth and seamless finish.

Being a woman, Han was very sure that when it comes to making video calls on the U700, users would want to first make sure that they look presentable. The result - a shiny, mirror surface so yo can check on how you look!

But it's not all just about looks. Add slight pressure to the keys that are part of the shiny face and you'll be able to scroll through the phone menu or read messages, without having to slide open the phone.

The rest of the Ultra Edition II family were also on display and ready for users who clearly were enticed by the good-looking, slim yet powerful handsets.

The other slider in the Ultra Edition II range is the U600, which is just 10.9 mm and tipping the scales at a mere 81.5 gm. It however doesn't offer HSDPA.

Still, users can take comfort in the fact that all handsets in the Ultra Edition II range, offer Samsung’s Optimized Power Usage Solution (OPUS) which increases talk time by 10% while saving power by 30% and super sound quality thanks to a collaboration with Bang & Olufsen.

Definitely one for those who want to be seen, and heard!
