An undersea earthquake unleashed huge waves on Indonesia's Java island on 17 July 2006, echoing the devastating 2004 Asian tsunami. After a strong 7.7-magnitude quake convulsed the seabed off Java's south coast, waves up to three metres high wrecked buildings and sent boats crashing ashore, prompting thousands of residents to flee in panic.
