YANGON: Several Myanmar political figures, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, were detained on Monday (Feb 1) as the military seized power in a coup against her democratically elected government.
A spokesperson for the National League for Democracy (NLD) party said Ms Aung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other leaders were "taken" in the early hours of Monday.
The move comes after an election that the army said was fraudulent – an allegation that Myanmar's election commission has rejected.
On Monday night, the military announced a purge of Ms Aung San Suu Kyi's government, removing 24 ministers and deputies, and naming 11 replacements in its new administration.
