OpenAI on Tuesday (Nov 21) said that it has reached an agreement for Sam Altman to return as CEO, days after he was fired.

In addition to Altman's return, the company agreed in principle to partly reconstitute the board of directors that had dismissed him. Former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers will join Quora CEO and current director Adam D'Angelo, OpenAI said.

The company fired Altman in a surprise move last Friday. Before the weekend was over, OpenAI investor Microsoft had hired him and Greg Brockman, another co-founder of the start-up.

OpenAI on Monday named ex-Twitch boss Emmett Shear as interim CEO.

On Wednesday, Altman wrote on X: "I love OpenAI, and everything I’ve done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together."

He added that when he decided to join Microsoft on Sunday evening, it was clear that was "the best path" for the team and him.

On Tuesday, he said he had the support of Microsoft chief Satya Nadella for his return as OpenAI's CEO

"With the new board and w satya's support, I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI, and building on our strong partnership with (Microsoft)," he wrote.

Brockman wrote on X: "Returning to OpenAI and getting back to coding tonight."

Altman's ouster started a revolt at the company. Nearly all of its more than 700 employees threatened to quit in a letter demanding the resignation of the board and reinstatement of Altman and Brockman.
