SINGAPORE: Dr Michael Tan, group CEO and co-founder of Fullerton Healthcare Group, has been named this year's EY Entrepreneur Of The Year. He will represent Singapore at the EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year, which will be held in Monte Carlo, Monaco in June 2016.
The EY Awards honour Singapore’s top entrepreneurs for their contributions to the economy and society. In his speech, Dr Tan said perseverance is key to being an entrepreneur.
"Entrepreneurship is a generally fairly lowly journey, a road less often travelled,” he said. “And so perseverance is absolutely key. (The) second one is try to enjoy the journey, don't be so fixated on the end point."
Dr Tan was also named EY Entrepreneur Of The Year for Healthcare.
Three other entrepreneurs received awards at the event. Mr Forrest Li, Chairman and Group CEO of Garena was named EY Entrepreneur Of The Year for Internet and Mobile. Mr Neo Kah Kiat, Founder and Chairman and CEO of Neo Group was awarded EY Entrepreneur Of The Year for Food and Beverage. Mr Mark Lee, CEO of Sing Lun Holdings clinched the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year for Manufacturing award.
They were judged on six global judging criteria, namely entrepreneurial spirit, financial performance, strategic direction, global/community impact, innovation and personal integrity/influence.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress and Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Chan Chun Sing highlighted the importance for entrepreneurs to succeed, given the highlighted the uncertain global economic climate.
He said: "The outlook for the next two-three years is going to be very challenging. Why do I say that? Because for all of you here, you are the creme-de-la-creme of the entrepreneurs and the tougher the economic challenges are, the greater the opportunities for you to shine."
