Asia Business First Forum
ASIA BUSINESS FIRST FORUM
This August, Channel NewsAsia’s flagship morning business show, Asia Business First, is headed to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Malaysia’s diverse economy and strong balance sheet provides resilience despite the slowing down of the region since 2015. The country is one of South East Asia’s fastest growing economies and has regions’ third highest GDP per capita.
However, risks still remain across the global economy. Malaysia’s most reliable commodity, oil, as well as its currency is currently faltering. Malaysia is impacted by China’s slowing economy and financial market volatility. These factors, including uncertainty about a possible looming General Election, threatens the country’s growth prospects.
Political decisions of trade protectionism and anti-globalisation from the United States are altering the power dynamic on both sides of the Pacific. As the U.S. disengages by abandoning the TPP, China is stepping in to embrace the region by laying the groundwork for its ambitious One Belt, One Road initiative. Change is accelerating.
However, Malaysia has been continuously making diversification efforts. From an agriculture-based economy to industrialisation, Malaysia has been working to move their assets and services up the value chain. The country looks to embrace the fourth Industrial Revolution by moving into the Digital Age.
ASEAN is looking for deeper integration with member countries to cater to her population of over six hundred million. The groundwork has been laid for closer collaboration through the ASEAN Economic Community. Nevertheless, challenges remain in creating a truly open market, as business leaders seek faster progress.
Join Adam Bakhtiar and his guests at the Asia Business First Forum as they discuss challenges and opportunities facing Malaysia in a special edition of the show.
