The Billboard Music Awards 2019 took place on May 1 (May 2, Singapore morning) at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas with Kelly Clarkson as host.
Viewers were treated to 15 performances throughout the music extravaganza with 56 awards given out, including for Top Artist, Top Duo/Group and Top Hot 100 Song.
The awards show kicked off with a performance by Taylor Swift, who made her return to the BBMA stage with her new single, ME!, after last performing in 2013.
Madonna also performed her new single, Medellin – with the help of reggaeton singer Maluma and a few Madonna holograms. The song is the first single from her upcoming album, Madame X (dropping Jun 14).
Three-time Billboard Music Awards winner, Halsey, took to the stage twice – the first time in a red body suit to perform her No 1 single, Without Me, and later in the evening with Korean stars BTS to perform their catchy collaboration, Boy With Luv. That second performance stole the show, earning the loudest applause and screams from teenage girls of the night.
Speaking of BTS, the biggest boy band in the world also took home a couple of awards, namely, Top Duo/Group and Top Social Artist.
Rap star Drake was undoubtedly the night’s biggest winner, though, walking away with a whopping 12 awards, including Top Artist (edging out Ed Sheeran and Post Malone), Top Billboard 200 Album for Scorpion and Top 100 Artist. He now has a total of 27 wins throughout his career.
Drake cheekily gave a shout-out to Game Of Thrones during one of his acceptance speeches: “Shout-out to Arya Stark for putting in that work last week, ayy!”
Other big winners included Cardi B with six awards; Maroon 5 with four; and Ella Mai, Ozuna, Luke Combs and Lauren Daigle tied with three wins apiece.
Mariah Carey was honoured with the Billboard Music Icon award for her 19-year career.
