Days after rumours started swirling about Chinese singer Hua Chenyu and longtime girlfriend who is also a singer Zhang Bichen, the celebrity pair admitted on Friday (Jan 22) to having a one-year-old daughter together.

Hua who has over 30 million followers on popular Chinese social media platform Weibo, confirmed the rumours with a simple post: “Yes, we have a child.”

Shortly after, Zhang also addressed the rumours with a lengthy post on Weibo. In it she shared that she was “dumbfounded” when she realised that she was pregnant in late 2018.

“Even though we were together and we had a vision for the future but we never planned to have children nor to get married, at least not in the next few years. That’s why I was completely dumbfounded at that time,” wrote the 31-year-old.

“I didn’t know what would be the right thing to do,” she went on to add. “I was so confused that I didn’t even know how to tell Huahua and didn’t consider how he would respond to me. I chose to leave, I chose not to tell him, not to let him know and to complete everything on my own.”

She said, “I left him. When I left, I didn’t give any reason. I only said, don’t contact me anymore. For a long time I didn’t take his calls, didn’t respond to his WeChat messages, didn’t let him find me and slowly, we lost contact.”

“I know I am actually stupid for doing this but I was too flustered and scared,” shared Zhang. “This matter far exceeded what I recognised in this world at the time. So without Huahua’s knowledge, I went through the pregnancy and delivery alone and became a mother.”

The 2014 Voice of China Champion also wrote, “Witnessing the child grow up each day, I felt I made an irrational decision. I deprived the child’s right to have a father and at the same time, I deprived Huahua’s right as a father.”

“He (Hua) said we should give the child a complete hukou (a legal document that records the household's basic information). He also said he would love the child, and let her have a healthy and happy environment to grow up in.”

“Even though we have separated for this long but we are working hard to re-adjust. The most important thing is to let the child feel loved, feel the warmth of a family.”

Zhang ended the post by saying, “very sorry for hiding this for so long. The major reason for hiding this was to protect his child. I want to let her grow up in a peaceful and happy environment and give her a life filled with love. Sorry to all the fans and everyone who cares about us. Thank you for reading my words.”

Hua’s team has responded to the development with a short statement. “Thanks for the attention. Huahua is currently single. Under the premise of no marital relations, both parties will raise the child together and participate in the journey of the child’s growth.”

Hua and Zhang met on the set of Be The Idol, a Chinese music variety show in 2015. Rumours of their pairing surfaced after Zhang was seen massaging Hua’s neck after he said that he was unwell. However, the popular singers never addressed the rumours.
