The 13-episode Mediacorp online drama, Victory Lap, is currently making a splash with viewers, not least because of all the shirtless hunks that appear on the show.

In a chat with 8 DAYS, former radio DJ and the show’s executive producer, Dasmond Koh, reveals that he’s appreciative of the positive feedback he’s been receiving.

He also shares that the drama, about four young men aspiring to join the national swim team, was the result of an idea he had along with the late actor, Aloysius Pang, three years ago.

In fact, Pang had even written the part of the coach for himself. The role was eventually played by actor Xu Bin.

“He said that he wanted to play the coach years after playing a swimmer in I’m In Charge. At the same time, we wanted to (go on a walk down memory lane by re-visiting) the memories that the previous generation has (of our local dramas), which is why we had shot a ‘bikini run’ in Bugis,” Koh told the entertainment portal.

The scene is reminiscent of Fiona Xie’s own iconic bikini run down Orchard Road in The Champion.

When asked what Pang, who died in Jan 2019 in an SAF training accident, would think of the show, Koh said, “I can't speak on his behalf but he should at least be happy to finally see a full-fledged production from NoonTalk."

Koh, who is the founder of NoonTalk Media, also had some professional help with the show, from none other than former national swimmer Tao Li, who appeared in a cameo.

Said Koh, “She was very nice and more than happy to help when she knew that we wanted to do a series on swimming. She even offered to link us up with other local swimmers if necessary, which would have been a great idea if we had a bit more time to go deeper into the local swim scene.”
