Hellboy opens in Singapore today (Apr 11) – and moviegoers will have a choice of catching either a PG13 or an M18 version of the dark fantasy superhero movie.
Co-distributors Encore Films and Golden Village Pictures announced they decided to simultaneously release two versions to appeal to different audiences. The former is catered to younger fans and families, while the latter is meant for “hardcore Hellboy fans”, according to a press release.
The PG13 version, which contains “some violence”, will be shown in 13 screens, while the M18, which will have “violence and gore” will be at seven cinemas.
It’s not the first time two versions of a film were released at the same time.
“Our previous release of Attack On Titan with simultaneous ratings in 2015 was a huge success and the fans were thrilled by the decision back then. This time round, we hope to achieve the same level of success if not better by offering audience a choice” said Joyce Lee, Encore Films managing director.
The movie, which stars Stranger Things’ David Harbour in the titular role, is based on the acclaimed comic book series by Mike Mignola and looks at the character’s origin story. It’s a reboot of the series following two popular films under Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro. Both 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army starred Ron Perlman.
The PG13 version will be available at Golden Village cinemas in Paya Lebar, Bedok, Tampines, Jurong Point, Tiong Bahru, Bishan and Yishun; Filmgarde Bugis+ and Kallang; WE Cinemas in Clementi; and EagleWings at KAP Mall.
The M18 version will be at Golden Village cinemas in Suntec, VivoCity, Plaza Singapura, Great World City, City Square and Katong.
