Jackie Chan speaks out about furor over antique buildings

Jackie Chan speaks out about the controversy over his decision to donate four antique buildings he purchased in China to a Singapore university, and says he "won’t do anything that would betray his people".

HONG KONG: Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan took to his micro blog on Tuesday, to respond to the recent furor over his decision to donate four of the ten Hui-style buildings he had purchased in China’s Anhui Province 20 years ago, to the Singapore University of Technology and Design.

“I never expected the issue of the donation of the houses to become so heated.

“I actually really want to find an opportunity to talk about this matter from the beginning to the end, because it’s a very interesting story, and cannot be told in just two or three lines,” said Chan in a micro blog post.

“But there are some things that can be said in a concise, direct manner.”

“Please don’t worry, Jackie Chan won’t do anything illegal, and won’t do anything that would betray his people.”

The 59-year-old action star’s decision to donate the four buildings has garnered mixed reactions in China.

Some have argued that the antique buildings are historical relics which belong to the state, and are not Chan’s to donate.

Others contend that these antique buildings have a higher chance of being preserved overseas, as numerous such structures have already been torn down by Chinese developers in recent years to make way for new buildings.
