McDonald’s New Zealand has replaced its Happy Meal toys with Roald Dahl books in a bid to encourage reading among children.
The fast food giant will hand out 800,000 copies of books over the next six weeks.
Six titles have been specially created for the Happy Meal deal: Wonderful Mr Willy Wonka, Matilda, Fantabulous BFG, Lucky Charlie Bucket, Brave Little Sophie and Marvellous Miss Honey.
Each book will feature story extracts from the original titles by Dahl alongside illustrations by Quentin Blake. The books also contain a selection of stickers and activities.
The project is part of McDonald’s global Happy Meal Readers programme, which aims to inspire a passion for reading.
Similarly, McDonald’s Malaysia is offering young diners the option of a book or a toy, with an exclusive 12-book series by English author Cressida Cowell.
Last September, McDonald’s Singapore released Mr. Men and Little Miss books as Happy Meal toys.
