Harvey Weinstein’s conviction has been hailed as a win for survivors of sexual assault as celebrities banded together to show support after the jury’s decision.

The former movie producer was found guilty on charges of sexual assault and rape on Tuesday (Feb 25).

Actress Ashley Judd, one of Weinstein’s early accusers, wrote on Twitter: “For the women who testified in this case, and walked through traumatic hell, you did a public service to girls and women everywhere, thank you. #ConvictWeinstein #Guilty.”

Rosie Perez, who was a witness in the trial and corroborated accusations against Weinstein, posted on Twitter: “Harvey Weinstein has been handcuffed & taken to jail! Gutted for my dear friend #annabellasciorra who told the truth! Yet I congratulate her & all who came forward for their bravery. This is not enough but survivors take courage! This is still a great win!”

"Today’s historic win in the Weinstein trial is a testament to the bravery and resilience of the #SilenceBreakers, and a victory for survivors everywhere. This is just the beginning," actress Reese Witherspoon wrote on Twitter. Witherspoon's TV series, The Morning Show, also takes on the subject of sexual harassment.

Actress Olivia Munn also shared her thoughts in a tweet: “Because of the women who testified, Harvey Weinstein was found guilty and is sitting in Riker's today. Your courage gives hope to other Silence Breakers that by speaking up some measure of justice will be mete. Thank you.”

Several celebrities also spoke up against Weinstein’s defense team. Sex And The City actress Kim Cattrall called out lead attorney, Donna Rotunna, who applauded her client for taking the verdict “like a man”. Cattrall said that comment “speaks volumes”.

Law And Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay also had an issue with the defense team using “victim-blaming tactics” but said that ultimately the case “also represented some of the very best within our society.”

She added: “Together with the many survivors who traveled to support them, #silencebreakers channeled the strength to arrive at the courtroom day after day. They did this knowing that there were people — millions of people like you and me – standing behind them. Join me in committing to making sure that survivors know that they are not alone. That we stand with them, today and every day.”

Male allies of the #MeToo movement have also come forward.

Ronan Farrow, whose articles first brought to light the accusations against Weinstein, wrote: “Today’s outcome in Harvey Weinstein’s New York trial is the result of the decisions of multiple women to come forward to journalists and to prosecutors at great personal cost and risk. Please keep those women in your thoughts today.”
