World Travel Awards: Malaysia named Asia's leading destination

Thailand was named the continent's top beach destination, while Hong Kong won in the city break category. Singapore had the best airline, airport and sea port.

HONG KONG: Malaysia was the big winner at the World Travel Awards (Asia and Australia) 2015, with the country named Asia's Leading Destination and Tourism Malaysia feted as the continent's Leading Tourist Board at a gala ceremony on Thursday (Oct 29).

Thailand was named Asia's top beach destination, Angkor Wat in Cambodia the top tourist attraction, while Hong Kong won the title of Asia's Leading City Break Destination.

Hong Kong was also named the top meetings and conference destination, though Singapore's Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre took the top meetings centre award.

Among Asian airlines, Singapore Airlines took the World Travel Awards' regional Leading Airline title, with Cathay Pacific (First Class), Hainan Airlines (Business) and Asiana Airlines (Economy) taking class-specific awards.

Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia won the best cabin crew nod. "First time a low-cost carrier has won the award," tweeted group CEO Tony Fernandes. "Super proud that we beat full service carriers, wow."

Changi Airport was named the continent's Leading Airport, while the Singapore Cruise Centre was named the continent's best cruise port, with Star Cruises hailed as Asia's Leading Cruise Line. Marina Bay Sands was named Asia's leading fully integrated resort.

The winners of these regional awards will compete with the world's best at the awards' Grand Final in Morocco in December.
