Vivian Balakrishnan on consular support for Singaporeans abroad who are arrested or charged(Updated: )
Singaporeans who are visiting, working or living overseas must abide by the local laws. If a Singaporean is arrested or detained, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will ensure that the citizen is accorded due process under those local laws. The extent and nature of consular assistance would be determined by the circumstances of each case, as well as the bilateral and international obligations of the host country. Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan outlined the consular support available to Singaporeans in response to a Parliamentary question on Tuesday (Feb 4).
