Khaw Boon Wan on maintenance costs in the drive for a more reliable rail network(Updated: )
Intensified maintenance has led to improved rail reliability, but public transport fares are not enough to cover operating costs. Rail companies are operating at a loss and Government subsidies have exceeded their intended scope of funding. Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan gave this update in Parliament on Monday (Jul 8), in response to a question from MP Sitoh Yih Pin. He said there will be a need in future to review the formula by which transport fares are determined in order to reflect the increasing costs of operating the MRT system.
