Lam Pin Min on Merchant Shipping (Maritime Labour Convention) (Amendment) Bill

(Updated: )

Seafarers will get better welfare protection, amid growing concerns over the threat of pirate attacks in the Singapore Strait. Under proposed changes in the Merchant Shipping (Maritime Labour Convention) (Amendment) Bill, employers must continue to pay the salaries of their crew even if they have been kidnapped by pirates. Their employment contracts must also remain intact. Senior Minister of State for Transport Lam Pin Min, who outlined the changes in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 25), said they aim to enhance Singapore’s international reputation as a "responsible maritime nation".
