Sylvia Lim on reviewing Singapore’s justice system(Updated: )
More must be done to make sure the justice system is not oppressive to the poor, said MP Sylvia Lim in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 4) after filing a motion on the issue for the Workers’ Party. She suggested allowing composition fines to be paid by instalment, considering alternatives to money bail and ensuring statements are recorded in a suspect’s first language. Ms Lim also said a constitutional commission headed by a Supreme Court judge should be set up to consider more complex issues such as whether equal protection of the law is in practice being afforded to the poor.
