SINGAPORE: Changi Airport is Asia's most popular airport for "self-connect" travellers who build their own itinerary by purchasing two separate tickets if a connection is required, according to a report by travel search engine Skyscanner.
In a media release on Friday (Apr 22), Skyscanner said self-connect travellers to Asia would choose Changi Airport when booking two separate tickets to save money, or for stop-over tourism. Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport and Hong Kong International Airport are next on the list in the region.

Skyscanner added that based on data collected, more travellers are choosing to purchase two separate tickets when planning their itinerary if a connection is required to reach their destination.
In 2014, the travel engine found that 11.6 per cent of travellers would choose to self-connect when planning their trip. This went up to 12.6 per cent in 2015, according to Skyscanner.
The search engine also looked at other airports around the world. A total of 33 per cent of seats booked to Los Angeles International Airport are part of a self-connect trip, making it the top airport in the Americas for self-connect flights. In Europe, Dublin Airport comes up tops, as 28 per cent of seats booked to the airport are part of a self-connect trip, according to Skyscanner.
In Asia, 17 per cent of seats booked to Changi are part of a self-connect trip, the Skyscanner said.
Skyscanner said the analysis is based on data collected from its 50 million monthly users who search for flights.
