SINGAPORE: The official flag presentation ceremony for the contingents representing Singapore in the Olympics and Paralympics took place on Saturday (Jul 9), with a 2,000-strong crowd in attendance.
The flag bearers for both contingents, badminton player Derek Wong and swimmer Yip Pin Xiu, were also revealed at the event, which took place at the Float at Marina Bay.
Said Low Teo Ping, Chef de Mission for the Singapore contingent at the Olympics: "All preparations and plans to safeguard the health, safety and well-being of our athletes and officials are in good stead. It is our priority to ensure that our athletes and officials have peace of mind so that they can focus on the tasks at hand."
Chef de Mission for Singapore's Paralympic contingent, Ho Cheng Kwee, hopes the tournaments will generate community support.
"The team of para athletes we have selected have worked extremely hard to reach a level where they can compete against the best in the world," said Mr Ho. "It is my privilege to lead such a team. I hope they have the support of all Singaporeans when they compete in Rio."
Singapore's Olympic contingent is made up of 25 athletes, who will be participating in seven different sports. Meanwhile, 11 athletes will be sent to Rio for the Paralympics, to compete across five sports.
