SINGAPORE: The People's Action Party (PAP) won 83 seats in Parliament, with the Workers' Party (WP) taking 10 seats in Singapore's 13th General Election.

WP retained Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC, and added Sengkang GRC after final results were tallied on Saturday (Jul 11) morning.

In the closely watched West Coast GRC, the incumbent PAP team led by Mr S Iswaran held off the challenge of the Progress Singapore Party led by Dr Tan Cheng Bock after securing 51.69 per cent of the votes.

Polls closed at 10pm on Friday after voting hours were extended by two hours.

There were long queues at a "small number" of polling stations in the evening, said the Elections Department (ELD) as it pushed back the closing time "to ensure that all voters who had turned up would be able to cast their vote".

At the close of polls, 95.63 per cent of registered voters - 2,535,565 people - had cast their ballots. "This is slightly lower than the earlier reported figure as at 8pm, which was based on the summation of estimates received from 1,100 polling stations," said ELD.

Voting kicked off at 8am, with a special time-band set aside for senior voters aged 65 and above at most polling stations.

Long lines were seen earlier on Friday at several polling centres across Singapore, with queues snaking outside several polling stations. Some seniors in the queue were given chairs to sit on while waiting.

ELD apologised to voters on Friday afternoon and said that it had done away with the requirement to wear disposable gloves at polling stations, as this contributed to long waiting times.
