SINGAPORE: Heavy construction work at Canberra MRT station along the North-South Line has commenced, and stringent safety measures are in place, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Saturday (Mar 26).

As Canberra station will be built on an operational rail line, work processes will be enhanced to ensure safety, said LTA.

LTA explained that it has implemented a project safety review process for the design and construction phases, and it has carried out detailed risk assessments for the station. A temporary enclosure will also cover and protect existing tracks and trains at the site of the new station.

In addition, a full-scale mock-up of the station column and roof will be installed off-site, before the actual construction, LTA added.

Pre-construction work for Canberra station began in 2015, said LTA. The station, located between Yishun and Sembawang stations, will open in 2019.

Canberra station is the second MRT station to be constructed on an existing rail line. The first was Dover station on the East-West Line, which was completed in 2001.
