Listening points for feedback ahead of Budget 2017

Feedback unit REACH and the Finance Ministry will be organising a series of listening points to gather feedback ahead of next year's Budget.

SINGAPORE: Feedback unit REACH and Singapore's finance ministry will be organising a series of listening points to gather views ahead of next year's Budget.

Nine REACH listening points will be set up in areas like malls, markets and community centres.

The first session was held in Bishan Junction 8 on Saturday (Dec 10) and another three sessions were held on Sunday morning at Ang Mo Kio, Marine Parade and Pasir Ris.

Members of the public can visit the booths which will be attended by officers who will take down their concerns.

The first listening point took off in 2014 at Jurong Point shopping centre. Since then, the number of sessions has grown from 23 to 55 this year.

"They raised issues like how to make Singapore a good place to raise families, issues about jobs, their concerns about the daily cost of living. Some also mentioned about healthcare. Some also gave their views on how to contribute to volunteerism and help others in society," said REACH Director, Nooraini Hamzah.

The listening points are set up in areas with high pedestrian traffic to reach out to Singaporeans from all walks of life.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, who visited a listening point in Pasir Ris, said such communication between citizens and policy-makers is essential to maintain trust between the people and the government.

This weekend saw some 1,200 Singaporeans contributing feedback at the listening points.

"I raised transport issues - to make it more efficient and affordable rather than make us worry," said one participant, who identified herself as Angelia. "Every time there's a survey conducted on the transport system, we always wonder if fares are going to rise."

Said another participant, Muhd Firdaus: "I'm in ITE studying mechanical engineering. The first thing I think about it is whether I am going to get a job in the future."

Once the feedback is collated, they will be conveyed to the relevant agencies.
